The Ultimate Brie and Tomato Galette Recipe
Galettes are a type of flat, free-form pastry that originated in France. They are a rustic and versatile alternative to traditional pies, and can be filled with an endless variety of savory or sweet ingredients. Today, I'll be sharing with you my own spin on the classic galette – a delicious Brie and Tomato Galette. It's an unexpected, yet mouth-watering combination that will wow your tastebuds and impress your guests. Plus, the buttery, flaky crust is a perfect match for the rich, creamy Brie and the juicy, slightly tangy tomatoes. Trust me, this is a recipe you'll want to add to your repertoire.
Ingredients:
- 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 2 tbsp cold vegetable shortening, cubed
- ¼ cup ice water
- 1 large tomato, thinly sliced
- 6 oz Brie cheese, sliced
- Fresh thyme leaves
- 1 egg, beaten
- Black pepper, to taste
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add in the cold butter and shortening, and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work them into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add in the ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Form the dough into a disc, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer the dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Arrange the tomato slices and Brie on top of the dough, leaving a 1 ½ inch border. Sprinkle with fresh thyme leaves, and season with black pepper.
- Fold the edges of the dough up and over the filling, pleating as needed. Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
This Brie and Tomato Galette is perfect as a light lunch, appetizer, or even a main course served with a simple green salad on the side. The combination of the creamy, gooey Brie and the juicy, slightly acidic tomatoes is truly a match made in heaven. And the best part? This galette is super easy to make and requires minimal ingredients. So, next time you're craving something savory and indulgent, give this recipe a try and enjoy a taste of France in your own kitchen.
